Object history | This design contains decorative elements of classical inspiration that Jean Jacques Boileau often combines in designs for silver. This and the other drawings by J. J. Boileau and his school were probably in the collection of A. C. Pugin and sold at Mr Wheatley’s rooms,4th June 1843, lot 469, Boileau’s (J.) “Series of drawings appropriated to the gold and silversmiths”, bought by Williams for 3 shillings. Pencil modifications on the front may indicate a suggestion for a larger base which would have made the jug taller. The body form up to the ribbed band is derived from an etching showing a bronze jug in G. B. Piranesi’s Vasi (Focillon 1918, 630). A jug which repeats more directly the Piranesi original was made by Paul Storr in… (Moss….pl,79). Ref |
