Object history | On the upper part of the sheet is a pencil sketch for a basket base on lions’ paw feet, possibly related to the design on the lower part. It is faintly inscribed by the lions paws “3 in high” and “The Whole”.
The sketch may be for a plateau inspired by baskets motifs. This design contains decorative elements of classical inspiration that Jean Jacques Boileau often combines in designs for silver. This and the other drawings by J. J. Boileau and his school were probably in the collection of A. C. Pugin and sold at Mr Wheatley’s rooms,4th June 1843, lot 469, Boileau’s (J.) “Series of drawings appropriated to the gold and silversmiths”, bought by Williams for 3 shillings. |
