[Note from cat. no. 990:
Though bought six years after nos. 990, 991 and 992 [related drawings’ museum numbers: 8505B, D.2268-1885, and 8505C], it came from the same dealer and carried the same incorrect attribution to A. R. Mengs, which suggests that the four drawings, obviously by the same hand, had been together in a group. None of the drawings is by Mengs. Dr S. Rottgen has suggested a tentative attribution to Conca.] |
