Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Choker necklaces, made from numerous identical elements sewn onto cloth or strung together on cord, as here, were worn as part of the traditional costume in many places of Islamic heritage, from Algeria to the south Caucasus. They often have pendants hanging from their lower edge, and the details of the main elements and these pendants can identify where they come from. This necklace was described as Modern Egyptian when it was acquired by the Museum in 1869.
The local name was given as Ekd, which is a probably a variant of the Palestinian name for necklaces of this type, Aqd. They were worn across the forehead, as well as round the neck.
