Rough sketch of Jerónimo Merino Cob, also known as Cura Merino

Drawing
1832-1833
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Lewis made various sketches, and some finished pictures, of participants in the Spanish Carlist Wars. He exhibited a picture entitled A Spy of the Christino Army brought before the Carlist General in Chief, Zumalacarregui [Tomás de Zumalacárregui], at the Society of Painters in Watercolour, in 1837 [316].
This rough sketch is of an ally of Zumalacárregui, Jerónimo Merino Cob, (1769-1844), also known as Cura Merino, (rendered in English as the Curé Merino.) He was a parish priest who had fought the French as a guerilla in the Napoleonic wars. He is alleged to be the priest depicted in the picture mentioned above.
If the reading of the watermark is correct, then Lewis redrew this sketch, probably from earlier notes, after he had returned from Spain in 1833.
Very few of Lewis's rough sketches survive, but this group bequeathed by his widow [D.1164-D.1198-1908] often contain his first thoughts. They are either composition sketches, or details sketched for inclusion in the finished watercolour and oil paintings.

Object history
Bequeathed by Mrs J. F. Lewis, via her executors and H. H. Finch. This is one of a group of rough sketches [D.1164-D.1198-1908]. Marian Lewis retained them perhaps for sentimental reasons. They had been in her husband's studio up to his death in 1876, either because they did not sell, or were not put into the Artist's sale in 1855. She did not subsequently include them in the studio sale of 1877.
