Gustave Doré was a largely self-taught artist who had illustrated the Bible in 1866. He painted the picture on which this print is based as a commission for the opening of an exhibition of his work in London in 1868. His contract stipulated that he would also make a watercolour version of the picture "fit for the engraver to engrave from" and that he would receive 15% of the entrance fees, engraving and catalogue sales.
