'Female antique class room', National Art Training School, South Kensington Museum
Cundall, Downes & Co., about 1860
Sir Henry Cole, the first director of the South Kensington Museum (now the V&A), emphasised that learning to draw from copies was vital in education. He wanted a varied collection to serve as a resource for inspiring and reforming British design. This photograph shows the female drawing studio of the National Art Training School, with casts for students to draw. This school was based within the South Kensington Museum for many years and eventually became the Royal College of Art.
