Decorative discs like this are found throughout the territories of the former Ottoman Empire, particularly in Armenia, Turkey, the Balkans and the Levant. They were worn by women sewn to the top of a little cap, like a fez. Their name ‘tepelik’, ‘tepeluk’ or ‘tepeliki’ is Turkish in origin, and means a small mound.

This example originally had pendants hanging from its rim, as can be seen from the loops on its back.

Brief description
Circular silver filigree head ornament (tepelik) set with coral beads and a central cornelian, Turkey, 1850-1899.
Physical description
Disc of open filigree set with 21 (originally 24) coral beads, with a boss in the centre set with a cornelian. The cornelian is lightly facetted and its setting is riveted to the disc. The coral beads are mounted sideways in closed settings so that their holes do not show. There are six loops round the edge on the back which would originally have held pendants.
