By the 1840s wood engravers dominated the field of illustration. They reproduced drawings supplied by artists, including some of the Pre-Raphaelites like Holman Hunt. For this print, Thompson used a delicate technique in which the creation of each black line required an incision either side. The result shows astonishing technical virtuosity, especially the fine line encircling the heroine.
