Place of origin |
This is a drawing of a proposed fountain for the City of Gloucester by the English architect-designer William Burges ca. 1858. The fountain's decoration is of the story of Sabrina and Estrilidis by Geoffrey of Monmouth. In it, she was condemned to be thrown into the River Severn that flows through Gloucester. The fountain's hybrid of styles and striking appearance is typical of the designer's style coined 'Burgesian Gothic.' The fountain was never built.
