Helmet

first half 20th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Warrior's helmet made of of cane with bear's fur, boar's tusks, hornbill feather and paper streamers. Conical shape. Here the fur is combined with a conical wicker helmet, probably for use by men of the Konyak tribe. The tusks indicate that the owner has killed a wild boar, and the hornbill feather that he has taken a human head from the enemy tribe. The paper streamers are probably simply for decoration, a material that would seem exotic to the isolated Nagas.
