This was Giles’s first experiment in transferring Japanese-style woodblocks to relief etching. He did not use a keyblock, but instead built up the image using colour and pattern from six metal plates. He painted his design onto the metal using pigment diluted with turps or petroleum, then manipulated it with a brush handle, blade or needle before etching. To print, he applied washes using brushes, shown clearly in the rainbow colouring still visible on the first plate.
