Circular tray with incurving walls and narrow everted rim.

The engraved decoration on the flat inner base consists of an outer circular epigraphic frieze and a central roundel enclosing a griffin with a halo, raising its left paw. Both the inscription and the griffin are each placed on a ground of foliate scrolls.

Patina: red oxide and deep emerald green spots over brown to black surface. The central roundel and part of the epigraphic band have been cleaned showing the olive yellow hue of the alloy.

Object history
Bought for £15 14s from Messrs Hagop Kerorkian & Co, 8-9 New Street, Bishopsgate, 28 July 1905.

A notice in the inventory specifies 'Probably from the neighbourhood of Bokhara', possibly hearsay passed on by the dealer.



Historical significance: There is no other known piece that offers a parallel to this tray.
