Marks and inscriptions | THE HEBREW CONFERENCE HALL IN MONTAGUE STREET,
WHITECHAPEL, NOW OPEN AFTER REBUILDING.
The Old Montague Street Mission Hall has been opened
after rebuilding. It is now renamed the Hebrew Conference
Hall. The hall has been ereceted by friends of the London City
Mission and of the London Society for Promoting Christianity
Among the Jews, and is situated in the heart of the
picturesque and interesting Jewish quarter in Whitechapel. The
inscriptions over the shops of the neighbourhood, the notices
and playbills and advertisements of the district are all printed
in Hebrew characters, and the peculiar Jewish-German jargon
is the language mostly heard in the street. |

Object history | This object was part of the John Edmund Gardner collection of topographical prints and drawings of London. After Gardner's death the collection passed to his son Edmund Thomas, but was sold to Edward Coates MP in 1910. The collection was sold again in 1923 after Coates' death, and was split between various institutions and private collectors. The portion connected with Hoxton, Homerton, Hackney and Bethnal Green was bought by the Hon. Arthur Villiers and donated to the Bethnal Green Museum. |
