Object history
One of 6 watercolour studies presented by Fanny Douglas to the V&A (E.323 to E.328-1924), made between 19 June and 17 July 1791 while Abbott was on a tour of Scotland, the Lake District, Lancashire, Derbyshire and Warwickshire.

The 'Queen of Patterdale' was Elizabeth Mounsey (nee Nicholson, 1732/33-1800). She lived at Patterdale Hall, Cumbria, with her husband John Mounsey. Mounsey's grandfather had become known as 'King of Patterdale' after his exploits during the Civil War, and this 'title' was passed to his descendants.
