Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
By the 1860s the development of new machinery transformed the jewellery trade in Britain. Manufacturers were now able to mass produce large quantities of cheaper jewellery. The V&A was keen to record and represent this new development. In 1875 the Museum bought this interesting illustration of manufacturing techniques from the Birmingham manufacturer T. & J. Bragg. This plain stamped gold brooch was made by machine. Here you can see the component parts that were used to make it, and the steel dies that were used to produce these parts.
