Place of origin |
The location in this uchiwa-e (rigid fan print) design by Hiroshige is Aoigasaka, which took its name from the hollyhocks (aoi) that can be seen blooming at the top of the hill. Aoigasaka was situated in the north-west corner of the Atagoshita district in south-west Edo, where water from the Tameike Pond flowed over a small dam into the Sotobori Outer Moat that encircled Edo Castle and its surroundings. The V&A has another impression of this print (Museum no. E.548-1911).
