This work box is typical of a type of fancy cabinet ware known as 'Bombay boxwork'. The maker has overlaid the outside of the box with sadeli, a type of micro-mosaic made up of faceted strips of woods and metals. The interior has compartments for needles, bobbins, thimbles and thread. This particular example came to England in 1813.
