Place of origin

This poster advertises the great French actress Sarah Bernhardt in the play Jeanne d'Arc by Jules Barbier at the Théâtre de la Porte St Martin, Paris, in about 1889-1890. As the manager of the Théâtre de la Porte St Martin, Sarah Bernhardt had absolute authority over publicity and was a keen guardian of her image. It was probably due to this that Grasset designed two versions of the poster for Jeanne d'Arc, changing the treatment of Bernhardt's hair from curly in the first to page-boy bob in the second.
