Place of origin |
Poster advertising a production of the two ballets scored by Stravinsky at the Hrvatski Narodno Kasaliste (Croatian National Theatre), Split, 1983.
Bucan was one of Croatia's foremost poster designers. In this image of the magical Firebird, the patterns of the composition seem to echo the strident energy of Stravinsky's music. Ancient Egyptian forms are also evoked in the flat leaf-forms and profile view of the figure. The scarlet beak and stiletto shoes add humour as well as touches of vibrant colour.
