Object history | The original acquisition records from 1927-28 identify the artist as F. P. Clauss; however general checks have brought up no records of an artist working around 1927 which match these initials. The print itself is signed simply "Clauss." However, references were found to a German artist called Berthold Clauss who specialised in prints and lithographs, who, with dates of 1882-1969, is the right age to have been a well-established printmaker in the 1920s with work considered good enough for the Museum to purchase. Plus, he has the right surname (with its distinctive extra S) and is working in the right field. It is tentatively suggested that this woodcut might be by Berthold Clauss rather than the mysterious F.P. Clauss. - Daniel Milford-Cottam, April 2014. |
