Bowl
1821-1850 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Bowls with 'medallion' decoration are both numerous and popular with collectors, and the V&A possesses examples with a variety of coloured grounds. This bowl, one of a pair, is painted in an interesting combination of underglaze and overglaze colours. The inside bears scenes in underglaze blue, while the same subjects (a story about the Herdsman and the Weavergirl, mythical figures corresponding to the star constellations Aquila and Vega) are repeated in delicate enamelled 'medallions' outside, set in a thick blue enamelled ground that has been engraved while still wet with feathery scroll patterns. The piece exemplifies the manner typical of the Daoguang era (1821-1850), combining a number of disparate colours, textures and motifs in an integrated scheme.
