Cushion cover for carriage, "åkdyna", is woven in coloured wool in geometrical patterns of different star shapes in horizontal bands, produced by a supplementary weft (alternatively "krabbasnår" and "upphämta") on linen warps. The back is woven in geometrical patterns by continuous weft patterning (called "rosengång"). Each corner, except one which is lost, has a tuft of different cut fabrics, mostly cotton.

Historical context | This design is typical of this style of extra-weft patterning from Herrestads area in Scania; the use of three wide bands of motifs separated by narrower bands. The cover front is woven with supplementary weft, in two different techniques called "krabbasnår" (composed diagonal-shaped units forming stars, rosettes etc., often covering most of the field) and "upphämta" (composed of squares, triangles, oblongs etc.). The back of the cover is woven in the technique "rosengång" (the wefts are continous and do not turn at the edge of a motif), 'rose path', named after the pattern the weaving resembles. This type of design is frequently copied in the 20th century (and still) by local handicraft association, as it is so representative of earlier work |
