Blast Furnace

Drawing
1941 (painted)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Graham Sutherland (1903-1980) worked as an etcher and a poster designer before becoming one of the leading artists in Britain in the 1950s and 1960s. Like so many painters of his generation he was appointed an Official War Artist during the Second World War of 1939-1945. He produced very moving images of the ruins of bombed buildings and of scenes in the mines. This watercolour celebrates the British 'war effort' during the War, particularly the British Government’s determination to utilise the forces of industry.
