Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This wallpaper has a design based on crystal structures. It was part of the Festival of Britain exhibition in London in 1951. Mark Hartland Thomas, who worked for the Council of Industrial Design, was responsible for choosing the exhibits. In 1949 he set up the Festival Pattern Group. Its role was to find modern patterns to replace traditional designs for wallpapers and textiles based on flowers and pictures. The theme of crystal structures was based on the work of Dr Helen Megaw, who was studying crystallography at Cambridge University. Twenty-six manufacturers in a variety of fields contributed to the project. The furnishings devised by the Group were used in the Regatta Restaurant and elsewhere on the Festival site.
