The American architect Frank Lloyd Wright also designed furniture, stained glass and interiors. The office he designed for the Kaufmann department store in Pittsburgh, USA, is now in the V&A. In 1956 he produced a range of patterns for Schumacher & Co, though he had earlier scorned the use of wallpapers in his own 'organic' houses. These designs, which were also printed as textiles, were based on precise geometric shapes. They often had optical effects, which made them too overwhelming to be used in domestic houses. This limited their appeal and they were not successful commercially.
