Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
The scene on the cup and saucer depicts a Hussar in uniform, seated on the edge of a broken gun carriage with a horse lying next to him. The scene was taken from a print entitled The Wounded Hussar made by the English mezzotinter Valentine Green (1739–1813) after George Carter (1737–94), and published by Robert Sayer and John Bennett in June 1776.
In the original print a woman stands behind the wounded soldier, trying to help him. The shield containing the letter ‘C’ with a lion’s head crest has been connected to Peregrine
Cust, a London merchant.
