Place of origin

This tiny netsuke (a kind of toggle) is in the form of a Noh theatre actor in the role of a shojo. The robes are finished in finely detailed lacquer, the hands and neck are in ivory and the mask is of coral. There is evidence of wear on the holes in the back of the netsuke (which would originally have held the silk retaining cord) indicating that this exquisitely finished piece had actually been used.
