This poster advertises the first Vienna Kunstschau of 1908. This was a government-subsidised exhibition intended to attract tourists and convince the world of Vienna’s superiority in the arts. Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) received an invitation to exhibit. The poster marks the transition in Kokoschka’s art between his Art Nouveau and Expressionist phases.

Poster with a stylised illustration of a young woman with brown hair. The woman is shown three-quarter-length, with her eyes closed and right hand resting under her chin; her head is shown in profile to the right, and her body turned slightly in the same direction. On the right is a vine with white flowers with black speckles. The poster has a black border and above and below the illustration is the text of the poster.
