Henry Alexander Bowler was a teacher and administrator as well as an artist. He followed the principle of 'truth to nature' in painting. The careful observation, intricate detail and clear, bright colours in this watercolour painted in 1860 reflect this principle. 'Truth to nature' was also the aim of the group of British artists known as the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, who were were active between 1848 and 1853.
