Mould Impression
Artist/Maker |
A resin image of the female Bodhisattva Green Tara, named Drolma (or sGrol ma), taken from a bronze mould (Museum no. IS 79:1-1991). The cast reproduces the clay votive images (or tsha tsha) originally made in the mould. These clay plaques, produced for sale to pilgrims, are still offered as meritorious gifts to monasteries or kept on home altars. The green Tara is an important protectoress for Tibetans, averting misfortune and overcoming obstacles.

By commissioning an image of a deity, a Tibetan Buddhist
would earn merit for future incarnations. At temples
throughout Tibet, worshippers offered inexpensive clay
images (tsa tsa) cast in copper moulds. This unusually large
mould shows the Green Tara, an important protective deity
who was believed to save the devotee from inner obstacles
or external harm.
