The Divan Japonais café in Paris was one of Toulouse-Lautrec's many haunts. Here, he shows the dancer Jane Avril and the critic Edouard Gujardin in the foreground, with the singer Yvette Guilbert on stage. The influence of Japanese woodblock prints can be seen in the combination of word and image, the blocks of colour and the stylised outlines.
