This is a poster for the French railway company Chemin de Fer du Nord. Since the 19th century, French railway posters generally depicted picturesque views or bathing ‘belles’ in order to attract tourists to rail travel. Adolphe Mouron Cassandre (1901-1968) broke with this tradition by focusing on images of the train and the railway itself. He often endowed them with a new feeling of speed and the romanticism of distant travel.
