Costume design probably for Paul Rattigan as Hamlet. The design depicts two full length male figures wearing Elizabethan style costume. The figure on the left wears a costume consisting of a black doublet worn over a white shirt, and black hose. The figure also wears a gold cross hung on a red ribbon around his neck. The figure on the right wears a long black coat. To the right of this figure is a pencil and ink drawing showing the back of the coat. The "National Theatre" logo has been drawn in black crayon in the lower left hand corner. Unsigned by the artist. On the reverse is a pencil drawing of a man's head.

Object history | This costume design by Lez Brotherston is part of an extensive collection of designs donated to the Theatre Museum by the artist in 2002. The design was executed for a production of Tom Stoppard's play "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" performed at the Royal National Theatre (Lyttelton Theatre), December 14th 1995. The production was directed by Matthew Francis, lit by Howard Harrison, the music was composed by Mia Soteriou, and the cast included Adrian Scarborough as Rosencrantz, Simon Russell Beale as Guildenstern, and Alan Howard as The Player King. Lez Brotherston was assisted by Matt Kinley on this production. |
