Place of origin |
This is a poster for Rowntree’s cocoa. James Pryde (1866-1941) and William Nicholson (1872-1949) were primarily fine artists. But between 1894 and 1896, under the name of ‘The Beggarstaffs’, they also designed posters as a source of income. They were initially inspired by the French artists Jules Chéret (1836-1932) and Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), and also by English artists such as Dudley Hardy (1867-1922). For them, poster design was an artistic challenge. They devised an innovative technique for it using collage and stencils to produce large, simple, bold compositions. Their agent, the Artistic Supply Company, advised them to design for Rowntree’s this successful speculative poster with its conspicuously minimal copy.
