From the 18th century onwards, 'China pictures' formed a regular part of private trade from Canton to Europe. They were shipped in boxes that could contain as many as 400 individual sheets. This painting is from a set showing botanical subjects. The Chinese caption reads 'fan meigui', meaning 'foreign rose'.

This painting is from a set showing botanical subjects. The Chinese caption reads 'fan meigui', meaning 'foreign rose'. Purchased from E. Parsons, accessioned in 1889. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project. |
