Floorspread

early 18th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This superbly embroidered floor-cover is decorated with floral designs worked in silk chain-stitch. The design shows a combination of Mughal and western approaches to floral pattern: the standing flowering plants in the border are drawn in the classic Mughal style, while the field has a layout reminiscent of Islamic carpets with a central circular motif and four corner elements pointing towards it. These corner designs of vases of flowers also draw strongly on European (especially Dutch) prints of large bouquets of flowers in vases.
The fine chain stitch embroidery would have been done by male, professional embroiderers of the Gujarati Mochi community.
