Place of origin |
Like many artists of the time, William Pars (1742-1782) travelled abroad to make drawings and watercolours of the places he visited. These works were often intended for publication as prints or for sale to connoisseurs. This watercolour is very delicate in style. The pale tones suggest an early morning atmosphere rather than the heat of a central Italian midday sun.
