Place of origin |
This is a commemorative model of a stone pillar for a chapel at Trinity College, Kandy. The 1 in 10 scale wooden model was made by the same craftsmen who carved the chapel's stone columns in traditional Sri Lankan style in 1927. It came to the V&A via the Church Missionary Society.
The model is made up in four parts and shows the construction of a typical Sri Lankan capital or pillar top. The two crossing brackets fit together and would support beams above the pillar. The model includes detailed carving of the common lotus pendant decoration on the capital.
