Model of a mosque pulpit in Ahmadabad

Architectural Model
ca. 1800-1855 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This model represents the pulpit in the Mosque of Muhafiz Khan. It is one of a group showing details of mosque architecture in Ahmadabad, in western India. This particular mosque was built in the late 15th century. Although the V&A has several models of Indian buildings, examples showing interior details are more rare. The top section, the preaching platform and railing, is detachable. It is interesting that the model includes this section because this part of the original pulpit in the mosque had disappeared by 1900. This finely carved model may be the only record of it.
