Place of origin |
The Fifth Regiment was the fifth of the original Republican volunteer battalions that emerged in Madrid after General Franco led the Nationalist military rising in Spain, in 1936. This poster was probably issued towards the end of 1936 and aimed to show a strong image of organised armed opposition to the Nationalist side. The Republican salute, 'Salud' is echoed in the main image showing members of the Fifth Regiment with their fists raised in the air, an international symbol of left-wing solidarity. The rising sun alludes to a sense of optimism that 1937 will bring victory to the Republican side.
