Wallpaper

Late 19th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This design is closely related to the real leather hangings used in 17th century Dutch interiors. It is decorated with putti (an Italian word meaning ‘little boys’) and garlands in high relief. Like 17th century examples, it is also richly coloured and lavishly gilded, although the gilding is tarnished and stained in places. In the 19th century writers on interior decoration often recommended these luxurious but practical ‘leather’ papers for dining rooms.
