Place of origin |
The starting point for much of the work of sculptor Anthony Gormley (born 1950) is his own body. This image is part of his Body and Soul portfolio, which is composed of nine prints made with different parts of his body, in this case his mouth. To make the print, Gormley pressed his mouth into a soft etching ground covering a metal printing plate. His lips would have picked up the ground where his mouth pressed into it, leaving the metal exposed. Immersion in acid bites the image into the metal plate. The area surrounding the mouth mark has been filled in with aquatint, another method of etching.
