The Violin

Watercolour
1932 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

David Jones (1895-1974) first worked as an engraver before turning to painting and writing. This apparently simple watercolour, with its swirling surface and pale colours, hints at a deeper meaning. In the early 1930s Jones painted several still-life subjects, of which this is probably the best example. It is said to have been the artist's favourite work.
