Gallery label
Gallery 100 ‘A History of Photography’, 2014-2015, label text: John Watson (active 1850s) ‘Academic Study’ 1855 Watson ran a professional studio in London’s Regent Street. The title of this image suggests it was intended as a work of art or as an aid to artists. The model is viewed from the back, unlike the more titillating nudes commercially available at the time. The lack of a reflection in the mirror suggests that the glass had been removed, or perhaps blocked during printing. Albumen print Purchased by Henry Cole from the Photographic Society of London, 1856 Museum no. 36:373 (06 03 2014)
