Turban Cloth

1872 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This cotton, wrap-resist-dyed (lahariya) turban cloth is still partially wrapped. The Museum acquired it with two others at the Internatrional Exhibition held at South Kensington in 1872, for 3 rupees and 8 annas. The contemporary records state that the three cloths were 'received' from Indore but adds, quite sensibly, 'Query Jeypore for make'. Although bandhani work is known to have been carried out in Indore and nearby Shivpuri, these lahariya turbans are usually associated with Rajasthan, and in particular with Jaipur.

Object history
This striking turban cloth was acquired with two others at the 1872 exhibition, for Rs 3-8-0. The contemporary records state that such turbans are 'favourites of HH the Maharajah of Holkar' (i.e. the rulers of Indore, whose name was Holkar). The same source records that they were 'received' from Indore, but adds, not without reason, 'Query Jeypore for make'. Although bandhani work is known to have been carried out in Indore and nearby Shivpuri, these lahariya turbans are usually associated with Rajasthan, and Jaipur in particular.
