Place of origin

During the 1800s, the demand for large reproductions of popular paintings such as this increased enormously. Hand photogravure was one of the processes developed from the 1880s onwards to supply this demand. It relied on the traditional principle of aquatint etching to create tonal reproductions. But it made use of a photographic negative and the properties of light-sensitised gelatine to transfer the image on to the plate. This was done in such a way that it could be etched in one operation, without having to work on the plate by hand.
