This photograph was among the first to enter the V&A’s collection. It was bought in 1856 by Henry Cole, the Museum’s first director, from one of the earliest photography exhibitions, the Exhibition of Photographs and Daguerreotypes at the Gallery of the Society of Water Colour Painters.
