Marks and inscriptions
Inscribed 'My dear Sir / I have found 2 patterns among my sketches that / appear to me likely to turn out very good / and I should think just the thing / for a heavy door hanging / [referring to a cinquefoil flower shape on a stem] if this ground is either red or / green / and the inside of the cinqfoils [sic] brown like the tapestry it / would look extremely [?] rich. / The other [referring to a rough sketch with a pattern of diamonds, separated by borders and enclosing a serpentine motif] should be a / rather dull brown yellow or a / dark [?] Maroon on green or blue / ground. / The spaces between [between dots in the borders] should be / a dark colour about umber the dots yellow / but it would be well to try it in / 2 or 3 different ways, for it is [a] grand old pattern the true old thing / ever yours sincerely / A. Welby Pugin.'
