Bibliographic references
  • Sir Henry Cole (1808-1882) was an eminent Victorian and visionary civil servant whose pioneering ideas created the museum which is now the V&A. With Prince Albert, he created the Great Exhibition of 1851, and continued to organise international exhibitions for the duration of his life. He was in charge of a nationwide system of art and science education, and, again with Prince Albert, developed the South Kensington area as the intellectual quarter of London. The Victoria & Albert Museum, of which he was the founding director, remains as his best known memorial, and is a symbol of his mission to education through exhibiting.
